Man of Steel: Could x Managed to
MODAL VERBS
IMPORTANT NOTES:
We use could to talk about an ability somebody had in the
past.
We use managed to to talk about a specific event in the past.

to swim 6,500 meters.

immensely.
However, with verbs that refer to the five senses, see, hear, smell, feel,
taste, and with verbs that refer to thought processes, understand,
believe, remember, decide, we normally use could, even when we are talking about specific occasions.

" Pros and
cons" essay.
1. Choose a topic you can write easily. Something that
requires only a small amount of
research.
2. Write a list noting the advantages and
disadvantages of your topic. Arrange them in the order you plan on writing them
in your essay. Create a rough outline of your essay, including how many
paragraphs you want and what you plan on writing for the conclusion.
3. Begin your essay by introducing your topic and
explaining that you are exploring the advantages and disadvantages of this
topic. You do not need a thesis because this is not a persuasive-paper. You
aren't proving anything; you are simply giving information.
4 .Use transitions when writing your essay. Do not
start every sentence with the words, one advantage or one disadvantage. Use
words like despite, nevertheless, yet,
however and although. Keep your advantages and disadvantages grouped
together. Write one or two paragraphs for each. You can also need moreover,
what's more, besides, furthermore, in addition to add new ideas to your essay.
5. Close your essay with the most important advantage
and disadvantage.you don't need to include your opinion at the end. If you write this sort of
essay correctly, you have informed the reader about the advantages and
disadvantages without persuading them with your opinion. But you could also take part expressing your opinion.
