We should all be feminists. 8th March International Women's Day

Last August I was coming back by train  from A Coruña when I met a dark skinned man in his early thirties. I  spent the really short time of the journey (less than an hour)   reading  Purple Hibiscus  by the African writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.  I was so much into my reading that I didn't pay much attention to the person next to me. It was only when my stop was announced that I closed my book and  he then said, looking alternatively to my book and to me, that we were reading books by the same author, which was certainly a weird coincidence. So he showed me the book you have below adding that it  had been  recommended by  his girlfriend. He had time to mention that  he was enjoying it as much as he had his "Way to Santiago". I felt sorry I hadnd't stopped reading before and  had a good chat with that man. But at least I thought I had a new book to read.
During the last week I heard this book mentioned in several radio  programmes  so I think today it is the day to post about it.

If you are curious about the writer here you can listen to her.

Questions Everything, everything

Sorry I cannot come this morning. As I guess most of you will be eager to write about the book, take a piece of paper and answer the following questions (2 pages maximum)
1.         Who brought a cake to Madeline’s door? Why?
2.         Why was Madeline at home all the time?
3.         What is special about the first day in the book, what do they do that evening?
4.         How did Olly manage to see her for the first time?
5.         How did Maddy feel the day after their first meeting? What did she think? What did Carla think?
6.         What happened to Madeline's dad and brother?
7.         Where did Maddy and Olly go and what happened there?
8.         Why was Carla fired?
9.         When Madeline gets mad at her mother, where does she go, how long does she spend there?
10.   Write a few lines about the end of the story.

Everything Everything Part 3

And this is the last part. Even if you have already read it. You can reread it and listen to the audio at the same time. It is a great way to improve your pronunciation.

Everything Everything Part 2

You never asked for the second part. I guess if you needed you just found it in the net. Anyway, I am uploading it in case you still haven't finished  reading it. Do not worry, you still have the weekend and we will be revising tomorrow. Remember to bring your questions, doubts, comments, etc.

Ondas do mar de Vigo

Known as "Pergamino Vindel" the manuscript of 7 poems/songs written by Martin Codax will be in Vigo till March 2018

This has nothing to do with English but with our history and culture. Some of the students from school will be lucky to go and see it at El Museo del mar in Vigo. Those who are not going to be taken should mention it at home and go with the whole family. This is your chance. If you miss it you will have to go to New York to the Morgan Library to see it.

SHAKESPEARE IN LONDON. OXFORD COMPETITION.

After a few weeks work in a very busy time for all of us, my students from 4 ESO C  have managed to finish the video in time to enter the Shakespeare in London Competition.
The prize for the winner?
Four days in London for the whole class and tickets to see a play at Shakespeare's famous Globe Theatre.

They have chosen a scene from MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING and Isabel Cascante has rewritten it travelling to the future.

If you like it, you can vote for it. But not yet, you must wait until 17th May and then you will have two weeks to vote!
Hope you enjoy it.  We had a lot of fun!

SHAKESPEARE

Shouldn't we dedicate some time to read/learn/ remember/ about Shakespeare?
Everybody is talking about him lately in England, of course you know why but what else do you know?.

Maya Angelou "Still I'll rise"

Last week, and talking about heroes I showed you a short but extremely moving video in which MAYA ANGELOU was paying a tribute to NELSON MANDELA, soon after he passed away.  I am posting one of her most famous poems.
She had a tough life but she rose once and again.

You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may tread me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I'll rise.

Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
'Cause I walk like I've got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.

Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I'll rise.

Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops.
Weakened by my soulful cries.

Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don't you take it awful hard
'Cause I laugh like I've got gold mines
Diggin' in my own back yard.

You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I'll rise.

Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I've got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?

Out of the huts of history's shame
I rise
Up from a past that's rooted in pain
I rise
I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.
Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that's wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise.
