CONDITIONALS

First Conditional:

IF + PRESENT SIMPLE + WILL

Ex.  If you wear yellow on stage, the play won´t be successful.

Explain other superstitions you know, using the first conditional.

4.- Walking under a ladder---------------------- bad luck
      ........................................................................................................................................
5.- Getting out of bed with left leg --------------- unlucky day
      ........................................................................................................................................

Sometimes the 1st conditional is formed with a verb in present, imperativ or with a modal verb.
Ex.  If you go to the party you may like it.
-          Without an umbrella ------------------- get wet.
........................................................................................................................................
Ex. If water is heated it boils.
-          People don´t eat ------------------------- starve
.........................................................................................................................................
Ex. If you can, do me a favour.

.........................................................................................................................................

·         Instead of if we can also use  unless.
Ex. Unless you start a diet, you won´t be on top form.
-          If you don´t go to Madrid, you won´t be able to see The Prado Museum.
...................................................................................................................................(unless)
If you use unless, the sentence must go in affirmative.

·         We can also changed if by when.
Ex. If you study you´ll pass your exams -----à  When you study, you pass your exams.

Second conditional:

IF + PAST SIMPLE + WOULD

Ex. If you didn´t waste time, you would learn a lot.
-          You should take notice that in spanish instead of past simple we use the subjuntive.
-          We could also use might or could instead would in the main clause.

Translate the following sentences:
1.- Si me ayudaras, te sentirías mejor
      ..........................................................................................................................................
2.- Si aprobaras todos tus exámenes, ¿a dónde irías?

      .........................................................................................................................................
5.- Si nevara, no podríamos salir.
     ..........................................................................................................................................

·         We also use the second conditional for giving advices.
Ex. If I were you I wouldn´t do that
-          Give advices about the following matters:
- Dejar de fumar
            ..................................................................................................
- Leer más libros
            ..................................................................................................
- No llegar tarde
            ..................................................................................................
- Quedarme en casa
            ..................................................................................................

Third Conditional:

IF + PAST PERFECT + WOULD HAVE + PARTICIPIO

Ex. You wouldn´t have had an accident if you had been more careful

-          Would can be replaced by could or might.
-          In spanish we use different tenses, we can use the subjuntive instead the conditional but in english we always have to use the conditional.
We can say:      Si hubieras trabajado más, hubieras aprobado
Si hubieras trabajado más, habrías aprobado
However in english we can only say:
If you had worked harder, you would have passed the exam.
